When selecting European hinges for cabinets, consider the following factors:

Do Your Cabinets Have a Frame?

While face frame cabinets have a frame surrounding the opening, frameless cabinets do not. You'll secure a hinge assembly to a face frame cabinet with a mounting plate that installs directly on the face frame. The mounting plates for frameless cabinet hinges mount to the cabinet stile. 

Do Your Cabinets Have an Overlay?

While inset doors are flush with the front of a cabinet, overlay doors cover the edges of the opening and hide the cabinet box. Inset cabinet doors typically use inset, surface mount, or butt hinges. Full overlay cabinet doors use full overlay hinges. Use these straight-arm hinges with a suitable mounting plate for full overlay cabinets.
