How to Measure Your Door Hinges

Before you decide what type of hinge you would like to buy, you need to determine what size hinge you need. Start by measuring the hinge from top to bottom and then from side to side. You will also need to determine whether the existing hinge is squared or cornered. A 1/4” radius will match the curvature of a dime, whereas a 5/8” radius will match the curvature of a nickel. We also offer combination hinges that feature both squared and radius corners for specialty doors.

What Kind of Door Hinges Are Best?

Hinges come in many sizes and styles. Installation methods vary and are dependent on the desired application. Heavy doors (over 150 pounds) typically call for pivot hinges, which we have in stock rated from 250 to 1,000 pounds. Wide throw hinges are designed to swing doors farther than conventional hinges can, which is ideal for doors that have wide door jambs. We offer five varieties of spring hinges:

Spring hinges, otherwise known as self-closing or spring-loaded hinges, come fitted with a spring and are designed to close doors automatically. We offer four different spring hinge varieties to choose from.

• Barrel: Barrel hinges are specifically designed for light-duty applications, such as cabinet and chest installations. All barrel hinges are named for the two barrel pins that are recessed into the edge of the door and the frame as well as the jointed connection between those pins that pivots, allowing the door to easily open and close.

• Butt: Butt hinges are the most common style of hinges used on entry doors, passage doors, and even cabinet doors. All butt hinges consist of two leaf plates which are anchored to the edge of the door and the door jamb. The leaf plates come together, only to be hidden between the door and the door frame whenever the door is closed.

• Half Surface: Half surface hinges, also called half mortise hinges, have one leaf mortised into the door jamb while the other leaf is mounted directly onto the door’s surface.

• Surface Mount: Surface mount hinges are mounted without needing a mortise to be cut into the door or the frame. All surface-mounted hinges have one leaf that secures to the door and another leaf that secures to the frame.

• Invisible Spring: Invisible spring hinges are completely invisible from either side of the door when the door is closed.
