      Overview

      • Recommended for toy chests, cedar chests, blanket chests, etc.
      • Screws are NOT included. Order our sku #286252
      • Toy box lid support self-balancing feature holds lid in any position to about 85 degrees.
      • This toy chest hardware is used in conjunction with hinges (or a piano hinge), these lid supports counterbalance the lid to keep it from slamming shut.
      • FORMULA: To calculate the inch/pound rating of your lid multiply 1/2 the front to back lid distance (in inches) times the lid weight (in pounds).
        • It is always best to actually weigh your lid on a scale. However, if this is not possible and your lid is made from plywood, you can use the following to calculate the approximate weight of your lid; 3/4" thick plywood weighs about 2.34 lbs. per square foot.
        • For inch/pound ratings over 140 use more than one lid support (do not combine lid supports of different ratings).
        • If you use two lids supports on one lid, the combined inch/lbs rating of the two supports should equal the inch/lbs calculation for your lid.
        • This product complies with the CPSC's voluntary standards.
      • For this toy chest hardware to work properly it is important that you use the simple formula shown above to calculate the "torque" or "moment" that your lid creates as it pivots on its hinges. It is a combination of the weight of the lid and the front to back dimension of the lid.
        • We get a lot of customers who ask, "Should I go to a heavier rated support to be safe? The answer is no. Get a precise weight on your lid, do the calculation and use a lid support that fits in between the recommended weight rating range.
        • If you are using more than one lid support and you are questioning whether you should use 2 supports that are at a heavier rating or 3 supports that are at a lesser rating, the answer is that you should choose the configuration that calculates out closest to the middle of the rating range.
        • If you need help with the calculation email us the exact weight of your lid (in pounds) and the front to back dimension of your lid (in inches) and we will do the calculation for you. We will email you back the correct items for you to order.
      • The maximum back wall thickness that this toy box lid support will work with is 3/4".
      • The spring colors are shown to help identify the different weight ratings of the lid supports.

The lid support worked perfectly for my grandson's toy box. Using the math formula to select the correct support and the three installation diagrams, I installed it in ten minutes. Now, Alex can safely pull toys out. This perfect birthday gift is ready for play next month!

6 Questions asked about Toy Box Lid Supports, Weight Rated

Q Nancy Doyon • 02/28/2018, 11:44:57 AM hello, previously I ordered left, right & center toy box lid supports (weight rated) sku 212008 & 212010. Now I only see left & center. Do you offer right side supports? thank you, Nancy
A 02/28/2018, 11:58:09 AM Hi Nancy! We do not offer a Toy Box Lid Support that would specifically attach to the right side of the box/chest. We refer to them as Right/Center, but it would always attach the back wall of the box/chest. You normally would use one or the other as trying to match the pivot points between the Left and Center installation can be difficult.
Q Doug • 03/01/2018, 7:05:13 AM What about right side hinges?
A 03/01/2018, 12:36:17 PM They are only made in left hand specific, and center mount. You can center mount one all the way to the right side and use a left hand one as well, but the manufacturer does not make a right hand specific model.
Q Ricky • 04/19/2018, 5:37:17 AM Toy box lid weighing 22lbs and distance front to back is 25 . Comes out to b around 275-280 inch pounds. Do I need to use 2 white ones or 3 yellow ones?
A 04/19/2018, 10:23:17 AM Hi Ricky! Based on those dimensions and calculations, we would recommend using 2 White Center Mounts that attach to the back wall of the chest/box.
Q Allen Snively • 08/14/2018, 4:35:29 PM I have a very similar hinge on a Men's chest of drawers but it takes a right hand mount on the bottom. It is so similar the mfg. must have made a right hand mount too. I have a left hand hinge and a right hand and the left looks identical to your pictured hinge.
A 08/15/2018, 8:35:04 AM It may have been made by a different company perhaps, our mfg that makes these for us only makes them in a left hand or center mount unfortunately.
Q Zachary Prusoff • 02/24/2019, 6:52:12 PM What product do I use if my back wall on the chest is more than 3/4" thick? I didn't read that in the disclaimer when I ordered this and so it won't open all the way (gets to maybe 50 degrees) and then it slams shut once I'm at the last 10 degrees of closing it. I'm sure if I just get the next size down it'll fix the slamming because the length of the lid needed to have the 5" back wall subtracted from it and that made it an inaccurate torque measurement... I just would like to know if there's another type of hinge that'll allow for a wider angle opening with a thick chest back wall?
A 02/25/2019, 9:34:22 AM Hi Zachary! Anything attaching to the back wall will require that thickness to operate/function correctly. We would have some other supports that attach left/right side, but also could be impacted by that thickness in the form of reduced opening angle and loss of functionality.
