Everyone, who has ever replaced a hinge has wished to find one where the screw hole pattern on the new hinge matched the screw hole pattern on the old hinge, obviously, so that they won’t have to re-drill the screw holes.

Over the past 50 years or so, there have been hundreds (if not thousands) of hinge manufacturers that have come and gone. The sad fact is that these hinge manufacturers have never gotten together and standardized any hinge screw hole pattern (there are two exceptions to this, see below). Put another way, it is nearly impossible to search for a hinge by specifying that the screw hole pattern matches your existing hinge.

Because of the labor involved and the very slim chance that there is a match, we are not able to search our warehouse for you to try to match your existing screw hole pattern. The reality of screw hole patterns is that it is easier to re-drill your screw holes than it is to waste hours searching for a match.

One other thing about trying to use existing screw holes. Sometimes the screw hole pattern is close but not exact. If you try to use an existing screw hole pattern that is close but not exact, you may find that your door does not close properly. It is almost always better to fill the old holes and re-drill.

The two exceptions regarding standardized screw hole patterns, apply to two specific types of hinges

European style hinges. More and more European style hinge manufacturers are moving to the Blum screw hole standard (45mm or 1-3/4”) between the screw holes for the 35mm cup diameter hinges. All of the 35mm European style hinges that we stock have the Blum screw hole pattern.

Architectural grade butt hinges (also known as Template Hinges). These hinges are heavier than the more typical Residential Grade hinges and are built to an industry wide template. Yes, the screw hole pattern of two hinges that are the same size will match exactly!

We are often asked, “How can I estimate how much weight these hinges will carry”. It depends. We buy hinges from several hundred different hinge makers. Many manufacturers elect not to provide weight ratings on their products, probably because doing so creates liability issues. If the manufacturer provides weight ratings, we always include them on our web page with the product.

Guidelines for determining door weight

The answer to how much weight a set of hinges will carry depends on what kind of hinge you are asking about. If the hinge is a butt hinge for a full sized door, email us the following information and we can tell you what size butt hinge and how many to use:

Height of door

Width of door

Thickness of door

Weight of door

Click here for our Door Weight Guide

Hinge weight ratings tip for cabinet doors, gates, shutters and windows

If we do not provide a weight rating on our web page, the best way for you to determine if a hinge will hold your door is to look for an existing door (or gate, shutter, window) in the same size range and see what type and size of hinge is being used. A hinge that is about the same size will hold a door in the same size range.

Two other things to keep in mind about weight ratings are:

In all cases, hinge weight ratings apply only to doors that swing horizontally (like the front door on your house). If you intend to use a hinge on a vertically swinging door (like a trap door) the weight rating will definitely not apply. Any installation, like this is experimental on your part.

The width of your door or gate is as important as the weight of your door or gate. As door widths get larger, a very large amount of leverage is created which puts stress on the hinge and the fasteners holding the hinge. Something to keep in mind when thinking about hinge weight ratings.

1 "PAIR" means 2 hinges. "EACH" means 1 hinge.

A “PAIR” means 2 hinges. “EACH” means 1 hinge. Please pay special attention to the “UNIT” so you receive the correct number of hinges that you want.

It is a myth that hinges are always sold by the pair

Take a look at your front door. It is likely that there are three hinges on your door. Does it make sense that door hinges should be always be sold by the pair, if the average front door has 3 hinges on it?

HardwareSource sells hinges by the EACH (unless they are packaged in PAIRS by the manufacturer). When making a purchase on our website, please pay special attention to the UNIT. The UNIT is located near the price of the hinge. The UNIT tells you how the hinge is sold so you can determine the correct quantity that you need. It will say EACH, PAIR or sometimes SET or LENGTH for special hinges.

For example:

If the unit says EACH and you need 2 hinges for your door,
then order 2 EACH — you’ll receive 2 hinges

If the unit says PAIR and you need 2 hinges for your door,
then order 1 PAIR — you’ll receive 2 hinges

The fact that a typical butt hinge has two hinge leaves makes it even more confusing. Take a look here for a more visual explanation:
