Terms for “Special Order” Purchases at HardwareSource.com

A “Special Order” purchase is defined as a purchase for an item or items that

1. we do not regularly stock and/or
2. for quantities of an item that are greater than what we normally stock.

Our normal return policy does not apply to “Special Order” purchases.

If you make a ”Special Order” purchase with us, you will be clearly notified that you are making a “Special Order” purchase and you will be asked to read and agree with the terms for making a “Special Order” purchase.

The following terms apply to “Special Order” purchase made with HardwareSource.com.

1. Our normal return policy does not apply to any “Special Order” purchases.  “Special Order” purchases are not returnable for refund or for credit of any kind.
2. With the exception of our “Return Policy”, our normal purchase terms apply to “Special Order” purchases. You can read our normal purchase terms at this link. Click here to read our normal purchase terms.
3.  When you receive the “Special Order” items, you must immediately and carefully inspect the shipment for correctness, completeness and for any possible shipping damage.  Any problems must be reported to us within 5 days after receipt of your shipment.  If problems are not reported to us within 5 days after receipt of your shipment, we will not be responsible for correcting any problems.
4. If you receive your “Special Order” items from us and you are re-shipping the package or packages to a second location, you must open the package or packages and make a thorough inspection as noted in #3 above.   If problems are found we will only be responsible for shipping corrections to the original shipping location. We will not be responsible for correcting errors (or shipping costs) to an address other than the original shipping address.  The 5-day time limit for reporting errors applies only to the original shipping location.
5.  You are strongly advised to pre-purchase a small quantity of the item or items before making a large purchase so that you may check that the items for suitablility.  If you decide not to make a pre-purchase of the items, you need to consider the following:

Measurements given for products on our website may vary slightly from what is given. If you need a highly accurate measurement of a product, you should ask us to double check the measurements.

Photos of products on our website may not be of the exact items that you intend to purchase. The photo may be of a product that recently had changes made to it. The number of screwholes or the pattern of the screwholes may have changed or may not be the same as what is shown in the photo. If there are certain physical properties that are important to you, you should ask us to verify these for you before you make “Special Order” purchase.

It is a myth that hinges are always sold by the pair.  We sell hinges in two ways; by the “PAIR” or by the “EACH” depending usually on how they are packaged by the manufacturer.  To determine how a hinge on our website is sold, look for the selling “UNIT”. You will find it right next to the price of the item.

A “PAIR” means two hinges. “EACH” means one hinge. Normally you would order one “PAIR” of hinges per door or you would order 2 “EACH” hinges per door.  When placing an order, please pay special attention to the “UNIT” so that you get the correct number of hinges that you want.

How to Estimate Door Weights

Figures below represent average pounds per square foot.

To calculate your door weight mulitply the size of your door (in square feet) times the number in the chart above (pounds per square feet). The result is your door weight in pounds.

For example if you have a 1-3/4″ thick door that is 8′0″ by 3″2″ and made out of oak, you would calculate the square inches of the door (96 x 38 = 3648) and divide by 144 to get the square footage (3648/144 = 25.33). To calculate the door weight multiply the square footage times the pounds per square foot for oak (25.33 x 7 = 177.31 lbs). Keep in mind that this is an estimate and does not include any hardware that you are going to have on the door.

Bronze is a “Living Finish”

Bronze is an old world material that does not deteriorate in coastal or other regions. The bronze finish, however, is a “living” finish. This means that it changes over time in a way that most people find desirable. When bronze is exposed to air it will tarnish quickly and turn brown. When bronze is exposed to exterior elements it will turn green. This condition is known as “patina”. This is also considered desirable by most people. These conditions are not considered “defects” but are part of the natural beauty of bronze.
Care for Bronze Hardware
Never use spray or liquid furniture polishes to clean your bronze hardware. These polishes may contain oils which could damage the original patina finish.

In climates with higher humidity, or if you live where there is a higher concentration of airborne pollutants, cleaning and waxing may be needed twice a year.

Applying Wax

All bronze darkens with age, however waxing may slow the process of oxidation.
To apply the wax, you need two – one to two inch paint brushes that will be used only for cleaning your bronze. Do not use brushes that you have used for other purposes as chemicals may remain in the bristles and if transferred to the patina finish, may cause permanent discoloration.

Start by applying a protective circle of tape around the metal ferrules that hold the bristles in the brushes you are using. This will help prevent scratching of the surface when applying the wax and when dusting.
Wipe your bronze free of any dust and fingerprints using a clean, dry, cotton cloth. Use one of the brushes to remove dust from small crevasses or hard to reach places.
Use “Renaissance” wax, or other “microcrystalline” waxes in most cases, because it is inert and will not yellow over time. Apply to the second brush, use three or four, back and forth, sweeping strokes. Do not dab your brush in the wax. This could cause an abundance of wax to be applied to the bronze that could actually harm the patina surface. Dab your brush on the lid of the wax can to remove any excess wax. Lightly apply a super thin coat of wax to the surface of the bronze using gentle sweeping motions. Apply more wax to the brush as described, working it down into crevices.
Caution – Using too much wax may remove previous layers of wax. It is very important not to apply too much wax or work it into the surface to vigorously. Cover the entire surface with wax and let it dry according to the directions on the container.

Separate Brushes

Keep your brushes separately in labeled bags, free from other contaminants, for future use. Using a clean, dry, cotton cloth, gently rub in a circular motion, the dried wax from the bronze surface until you achieve the desired shine. To achieve a dull surface, do not rub the surface after waxing.
To achieve a better protective coating, you may want to re-apply a second coat using the same technique.
